Importance of Good Documentation
Distribution-fitting software packages have certainly made finding a distribution that is a good representation for a data set much easier and less error prone than if one does an analysis "by hand." However, selecting a distribution in a statistically correct manner still requires considerable expertise on the part of the software developer, a "reasonable" knowledge of statistics by the software user, and comprehensive documentation of the software itself. The documentation should include a detailed discussion of how to correctly use each software feature and, importantly, many complete examples of how to perform a valid analysis. Without such thorough documentation, there is a good chance of making statistical errors and possibly jeopardizing the very success of your project.
The ExpertFit distribution-fitting software has the most extensive documentation available, and it includes the following:
Comprehensive context-sensitive help for all menus and all results tables/graphs
Online feature index and detailed tutorials on goodness-of-fit tests, available distributions, etc.
User's Guide with 8 complete examples (hard copy and built in)
